HP launched the Chromebook x360 in India a few months ago at an initial price of Rs 44,990. You can read our review here. While I was quite happy to see HP launch the Chromebook in the country after a long hiatus, I was more kicking about the next launched product. Just a few days after launching the Chromebook x360, HP launched the Chromebook 14 in India at a more accessible price of Rs 23,990 (updated price: Rs 22,990). And this is exactly the laptop on which I am writing this review.

I was thrilled about the HP Chromebook 14 as I felt it had an important role in the Indian entry-level laptop market. You see, unlike typical Windows 10 laptops in the same price range, the HP Chromebook 14 is not associated with heavy software or a slow hard drive.  It can come with 4 GB of RAM, but it is not a burden on a loaded operating system. In the form of a 64GB eMMC drive, It also sports a slightly faster storage unit. This, I thought, should result in web-only computing at least faster than running Chrome on a typical Windows 10 laptop. Was i right  let's find out.

HP Chromebook 14 : Performance

HP Chromebook 14 : Performance

Speaking of performance, HP Chromebook 14 was loading every tab in chrome in less than 5 sec. Some heavy pages like gmail took a little longer. But with multitaking, audio started having problems when the video was playing on You tube. Some common websites such as Google Docs, Sheets, Keep, YouTube, and OneNote Online had no problem running until multiple sites were opened. It is better for working in chromebook single window like Google Docs. However, many times, the display freezes or stutter can be seen due to moving from one tab to another and from one window to another or opening multiple links at once. The chromebook took 11.46 seconds from start to lockscreen and then 12.46 seconds to open the first chrome tab means a total of 23.93 seconds.

According to me this is faster than other Windows 10-powered budget laptops. And yes, also from the Lenovo IdeaPad S145. In other words, if you want to do light work in chrome like watching videos and you don't want to spend more than 23,000 then HP Chromebook 14 is the best for you. In this, you can easily check email or watch videos, make video calls.

HP Chromebook 14 : Battery Life

So the battery is one department where the HP Chromebook 14 doesn't disappoint you at all. During our test, the review unit was continuously taking 7–10 percent battery every hour. During this test, we had opened more than 20 tabs, in one of these we had internet radio running in the background. With the help of USB headphones, the HP Chromebook 14 battery was 100 to 74 percent after 3 hours. And it took the HP Chromebook 14 half an hour to be fully charged. Simply put, in HP Chromebook 14 you can work continuously for 8 to 9 hours without charging.

HP Chromebook 14 : Display, Audio and IO

The HP Chromebook 14 comes with a 14-inch WLED-backlit LCD touchscreen with a low HD resolution. The colors in the display of HP Chromebook 14 are washed out and the viewing angles are also limited.

The text on the HP Chromebook 14 display looks like grainy, no matter what font you use.  touch works well. Palm rejection also does not occur. The panel does not glare due to lack of glass surface on the HP Chromebook 14 display. But it would have been better if HP Chromebook 14 came with Full HD display.

HP Chromebook 14 does not come with a lot of different ports but in this you get USB mouse and headphones ports. The left side of HP Chromebook 14 has a USB-A 3.1 port and a USB-C 3.1 port, a Kensington lock slot. The right side of HP Chromebook 14 has another USB-A 3.1 port, another USB-C 3.1 port, microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Because in this you have been given HP's Sleep and Charge technology, so that you can charge a small device such as a smartphone from USB-A ports even if the HP Chromebook 14 is in sleep mode and this device does not have a fingerprint scanner.

HP Chromebook 14 : Keyboard and Touchpad

The keys in the HP Chromebook 14 are flat but comfortable and give good feedback in typing. But the sound that comes from the hollow surface is very annoying but the keyboard of HP Chromebook 14 is good according to its price.

The same HP Chromebook 14 Touchpad is also as good as a keyboard.

HP Chromebook 14 : Build And Design

So the outside surface of the HP Chromebook 14 is made of hard plastic which makes the device strong but it also makes you feel hollow, when you open the lid you get flex which is common at this price. There are bezels all around the HP Chromebook 14 display, the display hinge opens up to full 180 degrees, which is less visible at this price, 1.54 kilogrammes, its weight which is easy to carry and takes up less space on the HP Chromebook 14. There is a better device coming in the price which comes with good build quality and design. If you are thinking of buying a laptop for light work and your budget is Rs 23000 then HP Chromebook 14 can be a good choice.

HP Chromebook 14 : Bottom Line

If you are going to buy a laptop, then there will be many laptops in your list of options. HP Chromebook 14 will either be a part of your list or can be made now. Here I am going to tell you all about the performance, battery, display, audio, keyboard, touchpad, build and design of HP Chromebook 14.

Friends, the HP Chromebook 14 review unit we have has Intel Celeron CPU, 4GB RAM, and 64GB eMMC flash storage. We have used this HP Chromebook 14 for about 2 weeks and now our thoughts about it are being put in front of you.

Opinion :

The HP Chromebook 14 can confidently handle light web browsing, online document editing, and short video playback, but not all at the same time. It provides excellent battery life but cannot be said to be good for multitask.
