The difference between Virtual Reality (VR) and an ordinary computer screen is that: In Virtual Reality (VR), you can see a 3D image moving smoothly, in real-time, as you move your head. This is possible because here the user has to wear a Head-Mounted Display, which looks like a big motorbike helmet. It has two small screens (one for each eye), a blackout blindfold that blocks the external lights (so that the user has no distractions from the real world), and stereo headphones. These two screens display slightly different stereoscopic images, making a realistic 3D perspective of the virtual world visible. Head-Mounted Display (HMDs) usually have built-in accelerometers or position sensors that detect how your head and body are moving and adjust the picture accordingly.

Immersive Rooms

Immersive rooms are used as an alternative to Head-Mounted Display (HMD). Here the user is kept inside a room where the images which are displayed on the walls of that room always change from outside. As you move in the room, the images will also change. Flight simulators mainly use this technique, where images from landscapes, cities, and airport approaches are projected outside of cockpit in large screens. This gives a different reality feel.



This is true that no matter what the reality, we always have the desire to touch things. Even in Virtual Reality (VR) technology, we can feel this thing through Datagloves. These datagloves have sensors that have been wired to the outer side of the gloves so that they can easily detect the motions. Here fiber-optic cables are used which are stretched according to the length of the fingers. Each cable has tiny cuts, as more and less light escapes from these cuts as you back and forth your fingers. At the same time there is a photocell cable at the end which measures the light, how much light reached them. This allows the computer to know what the fingers are doing. Other gloves use strain gauges, Piezoelectric sensors, or Electromechanical devices (such as Potentiometers) to measure finger movements.


A wand is even more simple than a Dataglove, which is a stick that you can use to touch, point to, or otherwise interact with the virtual world. It has position and motion sensors (such as Accelerometers) built in, and also has mouse-like buttons or scroll wheels.
